Name
Ammonia Test.Description
A colorimetric scale test for the purpose of visually measuring the ammonia content of the water in which crustaceans are housed. The kit consists of a set of reagents, contained in vials, and a container in which to mix the reagents with a water sample from the plant.Quantity and packaging
The individual kit is contained entirely in its own cardboard packaging.Method of use
Take a sample of water from the plant and, following the manufacturer's instructions, drop the reagents into the container containing the water. Once mixed, compare the colour of the solution obtained with the shades on the scale supplied with the kit, corresponding to different ammonia concentrations. Please note
Ammonia is the waste product of the metabolism ofaquatic animals. It is colourless and at high concentrations has a characteristic odour, is very soluble in water and has a toxic effect on the animals in the system (crustaceans are particularly sensitive). It is good that it is always present in the lowest possible concentration: otherwise there is more or less mortality. The causes of a high ammonia concentration are variable: too high a quantity (the biological filter cannot process the amount of ammonia quickly) or a filter that is not yet mature (i.e. low bacterial population, typically new or incorrectly cleaned plant). In the event of a high ammonia content, carry out an immediate water change and keep the system well oxygenated.
Ammonia cycle
Ammonia (produced by animals) → Nitrosomonas bacteria convert ammonia into nitrites, which are toxic → Nitrobacter bacteria convert nitrites into nitrates, which are not very toxic. The nitrates are then absorbed by the plants, and in our plants they are disposed of through water exchange.
Storage conditions
Store the kit in its unopened packaging, in a cool, dry place, taking care to wash and dry the container and colour scale after use and keep the reagent vials tightly closed.Updated
